Can a modern sofa have an innovative design while making clear reference to formal sparks taken from the classical tradition? The answer is clearly yes.
We have seen it, and it is certainly been confirmed at the recent appointments of Milan's Salone del Mobile and Fuori Salone. I refer, for example, in the use of the upholstered seat cushions or backseats, the choice again, is not new as already proposed in previous fairs, but it was never so present in almost all the pavilions dedicated to upholstery, beds or, armchairs and sofas. Let's see some model of sofas.
It's called Lipp the sofa designed by Piero Lissoni for Living Divani and is one of the models that has gained more favor with the public and critics at the recent Salone del Mobile. It is a model of sofa that certainly look important, thanks to the high back of the base, on which rests the long back cushion with tufted upholstery.
The entire structure style, the same concept of this model, refers to a first sight impact, to the classic models, but the result is surprisingly modern and innovative.
The backrest and armrests are made in poplar multilayers, while the seat is made of tubular steel epoxy powder coated and finished with elastic band springing. The polyurethane foam padding is in different densities and is covered with layers of acrylic fiber.
The lumbar part, inserted in the back, has a plywood frame with polyurethane foam padding again with different densities. The upholstery is provided both in the solution in leather and in the one in fabric. The sofa Lipp is available in three dimensions 190, 235 and 280 cm in length, for a seat depth of 67 cm, comfortable but not bulky.
With the sofa Lipp, we have the reinterpretation of upholstered style according to the traditional geometric contemporary spirit of the brand Living. The apparent austerity of this sofa, smooth and thin in the thickness of the support structure, is softened and enriched by its well designed lumbar support, a refined aesthetic affectation that does not affect the clean lines but rather enhances them.
It seems suspended in mid-air the couch Wing, which Antonio Citterio draws for Flexform and this feeling is enhanced by the formal concept of seat and back, and yet soft and cozy essential in practice a number of horizontal elements suspended in the space, or backrest cushions the seat and armrests, all of which change the final look of the sofa depending on their combination and the addition of scatter cushions freely adjustable.
The supporting structure is made in metal, covered in leather with polyurethane mattress and seat cushions filled with feathers and a resilient inner core, while the back is padded with molded polyurethane foam and dacron with metal inserts. Legs and backrest support are in metal.
Wing is available in two versions with 258 and 308 cm in length, with a depth of overall dimensions of 99 cm.
How do you achieve the right sofa for a city, rather, for the City, or New York? If then it is even Manhattan to act as a protagonist for this project, then it takes more than a mind to think about the possible solutions, to propose ideas, materials, colors, shapes, reflecting different lifestyles for different ways of understanding this city.
Here, then, take shape the idea of Berto , already tested some time ago with success in the draft for the model crowdcrafting divanoXmanagua. The new sofa is called, precisely, SofaXManhattan and it was also thought by more than a mind and realized by more than two hands.
Dedicated to the city of New York where Berto is housed in the Living Showroom Designapart, the sofa is designed by Lera Sofa4Manhattan Moiseeva and Joe Graceffa, coordinated by Luca Nichetto. Theme of the project: design and build a sofa for Manhattan and for its inhabitants, taking advantage of the best minds and the best hands.
Everything is the brainchild of Stefano Micelli, Diego Paccagnella and Filippo Berto and developed in the first phase, 18 and 19 January 2014 in New York, with a workshop that brought out, among many others to participate, the figures of the two designers who imagined and designed the sofa. The original design was later reworked in Italy to be able to put into production and realization of the prototype.
The second phase, more properly crowdcrafting, took place March 29, when the project came to life in the showroom Sofa4Manhattan Designapart, where they met, together, creative craftsmen and the public to participate actively in all phases of the same sofa.
A work of co-operation involving historians upholsterers Berto, ready to share their expertise with those who attended the event. It was a way for the company to confirm its openness to new ways of interpretation of contemporary design, resulting in new ways to produce and distribute the product as designed.
The expert craftsman is open to new realities, it becomes cosmopolitan, compared with other minds. The result of this work to co-design and co-production was presented for the first time in Italy in the days 9-12 of last April at the Fuori Salone in Milan, in the space Onwards, in the heart of Brera Design District.
This also reflects the couch, as the entire production Berto, a passion for quality craftsmanship combined with that for the most current design. Sofa4Manhattan is an elegant sofa and built with quality materials, from fabrics and leathers of various finishes to customize it according to aesthetic and practical needs of everyone.
